The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) has appointed the country’s current advertising ombudsman, Peter Knutsson, as its director general effective 17 August 2026.

Knutsson’s appointment at the helm of the regulatory authority will run for six years until 2032.

He will take over the role from acting director general Johan Röhr, also chief legal officer at the SGA, who took over on an interim basis following the resignation of Camilla Rosenberg in November 2025 after she spent eight years leading the regulator.

Knutsson has acted as Sweden’s advertising ombudsman since August 2024, having previously served as a department head within the Ministry of Finance.

In that role, Knutsson led a unit of 12 employees and was the responsible official for the gambling market, public procurement, state administration and state-owned properties.

“The Swedish gambling market should be characterised by high security and strong consumer protection, and the Swedish Gambling Authority has a major responsibility in this,” commented Minister of Financial Markets Niklas Wykman on Knutsson’s appointment.

“I am pleased that Peter Knutsson, with his deep knowledge of consumer issues, has accepted the role of director general.”

Solid knowledge of consumer issues

Knutsson holds more than 20 years’ experience as a manager and leader with a legal background, with “solid knowledge of consumer issues and consumer legislation,” according to an SGA statement.

He also previously held roles at the European Commission, and as an advisor to the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority.

“With the solid experience Peter Knutsson has from, among other things, the Ministry of Finance, consumer affairs and most recently the advertising ombudsman, this will be very good for the authority,” commented SGA chair Madelaine Tunudd.

Acting director general Röhr added: “I welcome the government’s decision on a new director general for the Swedish Gambling Authority and will ensure that Peter Knutsson receives a good introduction in my handover as acting director general.”

Röhr’s LinkedIn profile continues to list his role as the SGA’s chief legal officer as ongoing, suggesting he will return to that role on a full-time basis when the transition is complete.
