Alberta’s regulated iGaming market is barely two months old, but there’s already enough data floating around to start painting a picture of who’s playing and what they’re actually spinning. Some of it is exactly what you’d expect. Some of it isn’t. The province went live on July 13, and the timing wasn’t an accident. Launch week landed right in the middle of the FIFA World Cup semifinals and final, and the numbers show it.
GeoComply, which handles geolocation verification for most of the operators in the province, logged more than 3.2 million location checks in the first seven days alone. Activity peaked at over 53,000 checks during the Spain-Argentina final, which tells you a fair bit about how many Albertans were watching that match with a betting app open. More than 100,000 users had registered across the market within that same first week, and that’s from roughly 64% of operators reporting in, so the real total was likely higher.
Twenty-two operators were live on day one, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, BetRivers and bet365, with around 50 having completed AGLC registration before launch. A month later, that number had grown to 27 private-sector competitors sitting alongside the government-run PlayAlberta platform.
Anyone tracking how this compares to the rest of the country can get a full breakdown through our list of online casinos in Canada, which covers every province with a regulated framework in place.

What Albertans Are Actually Playing
This is where things get more interesting than a straightforward signup count. bet365’s early rankings showed IGT’s Cleopatra Keno as the most-played title in the market’s first few weeks, with the rest of the top ten mixing keno, jackpot-style games and long-running slot franchises.
Nothing dominated. bet365 itself noted that the spread suggested it had picked up a broad casino audience rather than players locked onto one specific game type.
That picture shifted fast. By August, Cleopatra Keno had dropped out of the rankings entirely, replaced at the top by Pragmatic Play’s Fortune of Olympus, a title that had sat 18th just a month earlier.
Amazing Link Zeus held onto second place, while Amazing Link Apollo and Aristocrat’s Mo’ Mummy Valley of Riches rounded out a top four that looked almost nothing like the original list.
Branded content is punching above its weight too. FanDuel says its exclusive partnership with Light & Wonder on the Huff N’ Puff franchise has paid off, with Huff N’ Even More Puff and Huff N’ Lots of Puff sitting as the two most-played casino games on FanDuel’s Alberta platform.
BetMGM pointed to a similar pattern with its Game of Thrones slot series, which already broke engagement records in Ontario and appears to be following the same trajectory here. Recognizable IP, in other words, seems to be doing real work in a brand-new market where players don’t yet have loyalty built up around any one operator.

The Bigger Question: Channelization
None of this matters much long-term if Albertans don’t actually stick with regulated platforms. Before launch, an estimated 70% of iGaming activity in the province was happening on unregulated offshore sites.
Ontario, four years into its own regulated market, has pushed its channelization rate to around 83.7%. The Alberta iGaming Corporation has set a target of getting 75% of activity onto licensed platforms within the market’s first two years.
Alberta does have some demographic tailwinds working in its favor here. The province has the highest per-capita GDP in Canada, the youngest adult population of any province, and the highest per-capita gambling spend in the country, according to industry executives who’ve been watching the launch closely.
Those are the kind of fundamentals operators dream about when entering a new market. But converting years of offshore habit into regulated play is still going to take longer than one strong opening week, World Cup or not.
