Erling Haaland has opened a big gap in Kalshi’s market on who will rank No. 1 on Google’s global Year in Search 2026 athletes list. His contract is trading at a 49% market-implied probability, compared with 10% each for Jalen Brunson and Lionel Messi. That’s quite a gap for a market that still has months left to change.
The gap looks huge. It isn’t quite as comfortable as it seems.
Google’s list isn’t based on raw search totals. It tracks searches that recorded the fastest growth compared with the previous year. So an athlete who suddenly breaks through in 2026 has something Messi and other established stars don’t: a much lower starting point.
Why Is Erling Haaland the Favorite?
Haaland had the kind of summer that gets people searching. The Manchester City striker scored seven goals at his first World Cup as Norway reached the quarterfinals. He also scored twice in the 2-1 round-of-16 win over Brazil, one of Norway’s biggest results of the tournament.
Seven World Cup goals explain plenty of that 49% price. Still, nearly one chance in two is a lot to put on Haaland when Google hasn’t released the list and several months of 2026 searches remain.
His World Cup run may be enough. But with months of searches still to come, 49% leaves little room for another athlete to suddenly dominate the news.
Could Lionel Messi or Jalen Brunson Catch Haaland?
Messi’s fame cuts both ways here. Eight World Cup goals created another huge summer, but Google is looking for surging search interest. He was hardly an unknown quantity entering 2026. Even leading Argentina to the World Cup final and breaking the all-time World Cup scoring record along the way, Messi’s price barely moved, further proof that raw achievement isn’t what this market is pricing
Brunson is different. The Knicks hadn’t won an NBA championship since 1973 before he took Finals MVP, averaged 32.6 points in the series and dropped 45 in the deciding Game 5. A 10% contract price looks more interesting once that 53-year wait is factored in.
Alysa Liu Is Another Name Worth Watching
Alysa Liu’s Olympic year shouldn’t be overlooked. She won women’s singles figure skating gold with 226.79 points, becoming the first American woman to win the event since 2002. It was her second gold medal of the Milan Cortina Games after the US also won the team event.
Liu started from a very different place than Haaland or Messi. Two Olympic gold medals changed that quickly. For this particular Google ranking, the jump matters. She doesn’t need to become more famous than Messi worldwide to finish ahead of him in Year in Search.
That wrinkle also separates this contract from plenty of markets found on prediction market sites. Past results matter, but so does how surprising the search spike was.
What Could Move the Kalshi Market Next?
September isn’t December. One championship, retirement announcement or unexpected headline could still send another athlete up Google’s search charts before the 2026 data is complete.
Haaland sits at 49%, so there’s no mystery about who leads the market right now. But anyone following sports predictions shouldn’t treat Google’s list like an MVP vote. A retirement, record or completely unexpected story could create the search spike that changes the race.
