How Online Sports Betting Works in Ohio
Since sports betting was legalized in Ohio, we’ve tried out different apps to see what the process is like. Players can place their bets in person or through their phones. The only condition is that they be at least 21 years old and physically located in Ohio. They ensure this through GPS verification and their requirement for you to upload a valid ID.
Every sportsbook has a unique interface, but they mostly work in similar ways. You can typically fund your account through debit cards, bank transfers, or online wallets. The process is not always smooth, however. We ran into some issues depositing money into our accounts on a few sportsbooks.
Always double-check the terms and conditions before betting. The various sites have different betting conditions, so what’s allowed in Site A may not be obtainable in Site B. Some sites emphasize football, especially Browns and Bengals games, while others focus on different sports. You need to check that the site’s offerings align with your needs.

What We Liked and Didn’t Like About Ohio Sportsbooks
With so many OH sports betting sites available, narrowing down to the top five wasn’t easy. We had to try out all of them across several weeks to arrive at our decision. In this next section, we’ll introduce these five sites, and let you know why they stood out for us.
Bet365 – Reliable Sportsbook with Plenty of Betting Options
Multiple welcome promos
Longstanding rep.
Regular “Bet Boosts”
Great for props and parlays
Only available in 17 states
We decided to start with bet365 because it’s one of the most renowned sportsbooks globally. We found its interface to be clean and responsive, which sure helped in improving our overall experience. The “bet $5, get $150” bonus stands out since you’ll get the bonus regardless of the outcome (T&Cs apply).
Also, bet365’s layout is quite easy to follow, and the odds are often better than those found on most other betting sites. That said, the live-streaming feature is not as advanced as we’d have liked. Soccer was the only sport reliably streamed. bet365 could expand this, but overall it’s still awesome for an OH betting site. However, note that to access the live streaming feature on bet365, your account must be funded or must have placed a bet with.
BetMGM – Great for Variety and Overall Usability
30+ sports markets covered including the top US leagues
Superior in-play betting experience
Amazing BetMGM rewards program with real-world benefits
High-quality Android and iOS app
The welcome bonus only triggers if your first bet loses
Visit BetMGM Sport
BetMGM is another widely-used sportsbook in Ohio and beyond. The $1,500 bonus bet offer gives bettors enough confidence to wager; they know they have some cushion, should the game not go as planned.
What we found most impressive, though, was how easy it is to navigate the site. We moved between various markets, from football to tennis, and live bets without experiencing any lag. Their parlay builder is also one of the smoothest we’ve tried.
One thing to keep in mind is that payouts took slightly longer than at some other sportsbooks. Not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth noting.
Caesars – Smooth Interface and Appealing Bonus Offer for Ohio Bettors
FanDuel – Best for Simple Bet Tracking
Fantastic casino welcome bonus
Popular and niche sports
Intuitive website design
iOS & Android apps
Not available in all states
Visit FanDuel Sportsbook
FanDuel is incredibly popular in the US, and the app clearly shows why. The interface is well designed without being overwhelming. There’s a “bet $5, get $150 if your bet wins” promotion available. We tried it, and we got the bonus bets without issues.
One thing we found interesting was the bet tracking interface. We could watch odds movement and track pending plays without all of the clutter and chaos that usually comes with placing live bets.
It’s important to note, though, that if your first bet doesn’t win, you won’t get the bonus bets. So it’s not all shiny and rosy. That said, it’s still among the most efficient betting sites in Ohio we’ve tried.
DraftKings – Fast Payouts and Great for Prop Bets
Generous bonuses and promotions
Mobile app
Excellent live betting platform
VIP program
Limited live streaming
Visit DraftKings Sport
DraftKings has a similar “bet $5, get $150” offer to FanDuel. However, it’s not contingent on whether your bet wins or not. You get the bonus instantly without complicated requirements or delays. This is a nice way to test out new markets.
The interface is acclaimed as one of the best among sportsbooks worldwide. There are plenty of betting options without feeling cluttered. DraftKings also makes it easy to edit live parlays and react quickly to odds changes.
Of all the betting sites available in Ohio, this one looked to us like the most feature-rich, offering bettors more engaging wagering options.
Pros and Cons of Ohio Sports Betting Sites
It’s been about two years since sports betting was made legal in the State. During that time, quite a few betting sites have begun operating in the State. Here are the general pros and cons of betting sites in Ohio that we’ve found across the various sportsbooks we reviewed:
Pros and cons
Wide selection of licensed Ohio sports betting apps
Convenient account setup and identity verification
Variety of bonuses available
Some sites have strict Terms & Conditions
The Legality of Sportsbooks in Ohio
Since online sports betting was launched in Ohio in 2023, Ohio betting sites have handled billions in wagers. The market is growing rapidly, which means more competition and better choices for bettors. From what we’ve seen, the state’s approach feels balanced. There’s transparency, oversight by the Ohio Casino Control Commission, and a clear set of consumer protections.
Also, there are lots of measures in place to ensure that gamers use the sportsbooks legally. There’s location verification with the use of GPS, and ID verification, just to name a few. That level of protection reassured us about the fairness and safety of the sites operating in Ohio.

Comparing Ohio Sports Betting to Nearby States
If you’re living close to Kentucky, Indiana, or Michigan, it’s worth noting that these states also offer legal online wagering. Having spent time in each, we’ve seen some similarities, but also noted some key differences:
Kentucky betting sites
were launched after Ohio and only have a few apps available. However, the onboarding process is just as easy.
Michigan betting sites
are more mature, with well-established sportsbooks and occasional cross-promotions tied to Detroit’s pro teams.
Indiana betting sites
focus more on retail sportsbooks, though the mobile options are improving each year.
Still, for those people physically in Ohio, the current lineup of sportsbooks covers everything from major league events to niche college matches, and with competitive odds and well-adapted mobile apps.
Ohio Sports Betting Online – What to Expect When Signing Up
Getting started on any of the top OH sports betting sites isn’t difficult, but there are a few steps you’ll always go through:
🌍 Location Check
Location check – You must be physically in the State. Apps use geolocation tech to verify this.
🎂 Age Verification
Age verification – You’ll need to confirm you’re at least 21, often by uploading an ID.
🔑 Account Setup
Account setup – This includes your email, SSN (last four digits), and creating a secure login.
💳 Payment Method Setup
Payment method setup – You’ll be asked to choose a payment method. Some people prefer Apple Pay, while others stick to debit or ACH.
📜 Bonus Terms
Bonus terms – Always read the fine print. Some sportsbooks require your first wager to settle before you begin receiving the bonuses.
This process usually takes less than 10 minutes. We’ve done it multiple times, and while the KYC process varies slightly, each brand is made to follow standards that are set and regulated by the State.
Conclusion – Enjoy Simplicity and Peace of Mind from Licensed Ohio Betting Sites
Licensed OH sports betting sites are reliable and convenient. They provide some level of trust that’s entirely worth the sign-up process. We’ve tested many betting sites in the state, and identified five that we deemed fit to mention in this guide. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but the overall experience with all five was smooth for us.
The five sportsbooks are bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel. They are all licensed, secure, and offer odds on just about every major sport on the planet. They provide a mix of usability, an extensive base of features, and betting market coverage. They’re only different in how they process payments, their user interface, and how their bonuses are structured.
